Geography Computing Facilities

The Department of Geography and Environmental Sustainability (DGES) at the University of Oklahoma provides three computer labs for students within DGES programs. These labs are conveniently located on the first floor of the Sarkeys Energy Center (SEC) just off the West Atrium. N106 contains 30 computers, N112 contains 36 computers and M104 contains 36 computers. Also, the College Research Computing Services office hosts a multimedia lab on the 6th floor. Located in SEC 639, this lab contains 5 computers as well as a flat-bed scanner, large-scale printer (by appointment), laminating machine, DVD duplicator, VHS to DVD conversion system and features technical support by an RCS tech at some times. Technician availability will be posted on the door.

The labs are available 24/7 (when not in class session). It is departmental policy to schedule classes in such a way to leave a place for students to access a computer at all times. Access to the DGES Computer Labs are limited to current DGES faculty, staff and students registered in a DGES program; either undergraduate or graduate level. In addition, students who enroll in a DGES class that requires access to the computer lab will be given access only for the semester they are enrolled in the class. Access entails both physical access to the room and login access to the computers. Typically, student data is removed from the system when courses end. As a courtesy, the department allows Geography, GIS and Environmental Sustainability majors and minors to retain their data until graduation or upon leaving the University. All questions related to DGES computer accounts should be sent to

The department upgrades computer systems in the labs on a 2-3 year rotation. Older equipment is rotated out and used by DGES faculty, staff, and graduate students. A 6-year system life is expected. Only high end workstation computers with large monitors that can easily handle GIS and Remote Sensing research and class activities are purchased for these labs.

Lab software utilizes Microsoft Windows 7. GIS software includes the ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcInfo suites. Remote Sensing software currently in use is ENVI. The labs also feature complete installs of Microsoft Office 2016. Other software is installed or removed as needed for teaching purposes.
The Department provides access to a high volume printer/copier located in M104.

DGES computer labs are funded by the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences Technology fee. The EduTech Committee, composed of College of A&GS students, faculty and staff, meet twice yearly to oversee the spending of the Technology Fee.
